The Fabric Boutique - Introduction to Dressmaking - Drawstring “Pajama”bottoms/trousers - 4 week course (Week 3)

This four week introduction to dressmaking is perfect if you’re already comfortable using a sewing machine and are ready to take the next step into making your own clothes.

Led by experienced sewing teacher Emma Smith the course is designed to build confidence and skills at a steady supportive pace. Emma has been teaching for many years and is known for her patient attentive approach. There’s plenty of guidance and time to ask questions along the way.

In this workshop you will be sewing the Wardrobe By Me “Unisex Pajama Pants” - a simple unisex design that’s ideal for building confidence and learning essential garment making skills. The price of the workshop includes an original printed copy of the pattern.

The “pajama pants” are loose fitting, comfortable and straightforward to sew, featuring an elasticated waistband with a drawstring. While they’re designed as pyjamas, this style has become hugely popular as every day wear, and for good reason. With the right fabric choice, they work beautifully as relaxed, drawstring trousers - a trend that shows no sign of disappearing.

Choose a classic night wear fabric and you’ll have cosy pyjamas; opt for something a little more structured or stylish and you create a pair of trousers you’ll happily wear out and about. We’ve chosen this pattern because it’s simple, versatile and genuinely achievable for everyone - making it the perfect first step into dressmaking!

The course is split over four weeks -

  • week one - Thursday 5th February 6.30 - 8.30pm.

In the first session you’ll get to grips with dressmaking patterns - how to measure yourself accurately, how to choose the correct size and how to understand all the important pattern details, such as markings, notches and lines.

  • week two - Thursday 12th February 6.30 - 8.30pm.

The second session focuses on fabric preparation, including choosing the right fabric for your pattern, understanding nap and pattern direction and cutting your fabric correctly.

  • week three - Thursday 19th February 6.30 - 8.30pm.

  • week four - Thursday 26th February 6.30 - 8.30pm.

The final two weeks are all about sewing your garment together with Emma on hand to guide you through each and every stage and help you achieve a finish you can be proud of*.  Emma will also ensure that you have the correct fit for your garment.

NB, this class is not suitable for complete beginners. You must be familiar with a sewing machine and have used one before. If for a complete beginner and are looking embark on your sewing journey, we suggest you start with the “Complete Beginner - learn how to use a sewing machine” workshop.

*most participants do complete their projects during the workshop. However, as everyone works at their own pace, completion can vary. Any remaining steps will be clearly explained so you can confidently finish your piece at home.

The Sewing Boutique - Sew a pair of fly front trousers (day 1)

Discover the joy of making your own fly-front trousers at this creative and supportive sewing workshop, featuring The Flaneur Pants by Friday Pattern Company.

Designed as a two-day workshop, this course offers a relaxed and thoughtful learning experience. Spreading the workshop over two full days allows time to focus on each stage of the process, ask questions as they arise, and build confidence without feeling rushed. The emphasis is on understanding fit, construction and technique, in a calm and sociable setting where enjoyment of the making process is just as important as the finished garment.

What you will learn

• How to adjust and refine trouser fit so your finished trousers suit your body and feel great to wear

• How to insert a zip and construct a fly front with confidence

• How to work with a flat front and elasticated back waistband for comfort and flexibility

Workshop details

• Dates: Wednesday 18th – Thursday 19th March 2026

• Time: 9.30am – 4.30pm each day

Led by experienced sewing teacher Emma Smith, the workshop is taught at a steady, supportive pace. Emma has been teaching for many years and is known for her patient, attentive approach. There will be plenty of opportunity for individual guidance and questions throughout the two days.

This workshop is best suited to intermediate sewers.

About the pattern

The Flaneur Pants are a wide-leg, mid-rise trouser featuring a zip fly with a flat front and elasticated back. They do not have a side seam, making them easier to cut and sew, and particularly well suited to print fabrics. Optional patch pockets on the side and back can be added, and the overall fit is designed to be comfortable and flexible.

You can size up for a relaxed, slightly oversized fit, or size down for a more fitted look. Emma will guide you through these choices to help you achieve the best fit for you. The pattern is an inclusive size range, fitting hips from 86.4cm / 34” to 157cm / 62”.

The Flaneur Pants pattern is included in the cost of the workshop. This printed pattern includes a full instruction booklet and full-sized pattern pages, packaged in a full-colour coated cardstock envelope for easy storage.

You’ll be guided through the construction step by step, with plenty of support along the way. This session is very much about learning, tweaking and understanding fit, so you leave with trousers you genuinely love to wear*.

Fabric recommendations

We recommend mid- to heavy-weight woven fabrics, such as linen/cotton blends, denim, cotton drill/canvas or twill. For a lighter-weight trouser, viscose twill, linen or suiting fabrics also work well.

If you’d like help choosing fabric, just let us know - we’re always happy to point you in the right direction. You’re also very welcome to arrive 30 minutes early on the day to choose and purchase fabric in the shop.

There will be a ½-hour break for lunch.

A friendly and supportive couple of days of sewing, fitting and finishing - and hopefully the start of many pairs of handmade trousers to come!

What do I need to bring?

• A sewing kit with the essentials: small scissors, large scissors, pins or clips, hand sewing needles, a fabric marking implement and a seam ripper

• Materials for your garment. You can bring your own (please see the photo of the back of the pattern for fabric quantities and notions), or purchase from the shop

• If you wish to buy your supplies on the day, please arrive at least 30 minutes early so the class can start on time

• A notebook (recommended for jotting down tips and notes to refer to at home)

• A water bottl3

Should you require any notions or haberdashery, these can be purchased from The Fabric Boutique. Attendees of sewing classes receive 10% off shop purchases when spending over £25 on the day.

What’s included

• Tea, coffee and biscuits/cake (because sewing is always better with refreshments!)

• Use of Janome 5060QDC sewing machines, overlockers, ironing boards and irons

• Small class sizes of 5–6 people, ensuring plenty of individual attention

Please note: If you choose the ankle-length tiered skirt version, this option does involve a little more sewing than the other views, so you may not quite finish within the workshop time. That said, you’ll have completed all the fitting and the most important construction stages, and anything left to do can easily be finished at home. Emma will talk you through the remaining steps and you’ll also have the excellent Cashmerette instruction booklet to guide you — and of course, many people do manage to finish on the day too.

The workshop runs over 7 hours, with lots of support throughout. Our lovely tutor, Emma, will guide you through every step - from choosing the correct size and making any grading adjustments, to sewing the dress and fine-tuning the fit so it feels just right for you.

The workshop price includes the paper pattern, which you’ll be able to take home afterwards, ready to make many more Roseclair wrap dresses for your wardrobe.

Every project is individual so we can tailor it to your own style and ability level. You can feel confident tackling new techniques knowing that technical help is always to hand.

Choose your project from the Sew Different range of multisize patterns. The designer, Laura, is often there on day one to “show you round” the patterns and assist with your choice.

We will be very happy to guide you towards a project that is right for your level of expertise and there are plenty of clothing samples in the studio to inspire you.

In the past we have helped to customise and pattern hack for our sewists to reflect their creative urges(!) so that each project is unique.

The Fabric Boutique - Introduction to Dressmaking - Drawstring “Pajama”bottoms/trousers - 4 week course (Week 2)

The Fabric Boutique- Sew A Pair Of Trousers workshop

Join us at The Fabric Boutique for a relaxed, confidence-boosting trouser-making workshop, where we’ll be sewing the “Rose” trousers by Made by Rae (#mbrrose). The workshop is 7 hours long.

Led by experienced sewing teacher Emma Smith, the course is designed to build confidence and skills at a steady supportive pace. Emma has been teaching for many years and is known for her patient attentive approach. There’s plenty of guidance and time to ask questions along the way.

This workshop is best suited to confident beginners and intermediate sewers who are happy using a sewing machine and following a pattern, and would like to build their skills while creating a beautifully wearable garment*.

Rose is a lovely, everyday design featuring a flattering high waist, slash pockets (because pockets matter!) and a softly pleated front. The back waist is elasticated for comfort and style, and the pattern offers plenty of choice — three trouser lengths and several pleat options, so you can really make them your own with the help of the tutor.

Sizes are from 67 cm/26.5 inch Waist - 88 cm/34.5 inch Hip (XXS) through to 130 cm/51 inch Waist - 150 cm/59 inch Hip (Size 5).

The Rose pattern is included in the cost of the workshop - this lovely printed pattern includes a complete instructions booklet and full-sized pattern pages packaged in a beautiful full-colour coated cardstock envelope for easy storage. You’ll be guided through the construction step by step by Emma, with plenty of support along the way. This session is all about learning, tweaking and understanding fit, so you leave with trousers you genuinely love to wear.

We recommend a light to medium weight woven fabric, such as a viscose-linen blend, chambray, cotton sateen, cotton or stretch twill. If you’d like help choosing fabric, just let us know - we’re always happy to point you in the right direction😊 You’re also very welcome to arrive 30 minutes early on the day to choose and purchase fabric in the shop.

The workshop takes place on Thursday 12th February 9.30am - 5.00pm.

The Fabric Boutique - Introduction to Dressmaking - Drawstring “Pajama”bottoms/trousers - 4 week course

Every project is individual so we can tailor it to your own style and ability level. You can feel confident tackling new techniques knowing that technical help is always to hand.

We will be very happy to guide you towards a project that is right for your level of expertise and there are plenty of clothing samples in the studio to inspire you.

In the past we have helped to customise and pattern hack for our sewists to reflect their creative urges(!) so that each project is unique.

Starting with a simple bodice block / sloper you will make adjustments to the calico mock up and then transfer these adjustments to create a bodice block which works for your body.
A very common adjustment is to allow for a larger bust. It is often known as a Full Bust Adjustment or FBA. Once you know how to make this alteration to your paper patterns, your dressmaking will be transformed forever!

What you will learn/achieve

The workshop will cover:

  • Taking accurate measurements

  • Making a calico mock up - also known as a muslin/toile

  • Evaluating fit

  • Fitting adjustments

  • Transferring those adjustments back to your block.

You’ll make a muslin/toile and then be able to make further adjustments to your pattern.

What's included

Tuition: full instruction and support in a friendly incusive environment. Small class size

All tools and equipment needed on the day, including calico and pattern paper.

Use of Pfaff and Janome machines and sewing kit in Stitching Kitchen's fully equipped studio.

Sew Different, Halifax - 3 day sewing retreat

Sew Different brings you their new sewing retreat set in the amazing mill complex of Dean Clough in Halifax. Spend a long weekend browsing fabrics, learning new techniques and creating a stylish piece of clothing that is completely unique. In between stitches you can indulge in a delicious afternoon tea and chat with like-minded sewists.

Choose your project from the Sew Different range of sewing patterns and, with the help of our expert advice and tuition, create a dress, top or jacket that fits you beautifully.

The Course

Our sewing retreat is suitable for all levels of experience. There is tuition on hand for beginners and intermediate sewists who have perhaps done some small sewing projects or made simple garments in the past.

The more experienced will enjoy the communal sewing spirit, the creative atmosphere and the trip out to the lovely Fabbadashery in Halifax where there will be time to browse and select from their beautifully curated range of fabrics. There will be help and advice in choosing your fabric from the resident experts.

After this, it is back to our dedicated sewing studio where you will have the benefit of a small teaching group (max 10) so that there is plenty of opportunity for one-on-one help if needed.

Our sewing teachers, Emma (right) and Tara (left), have many years experience with beginners, as well as more able sewists. Help and advice is there every step of the way, from choosing your fabric, to cutting your pattern and putting your garment together.
