Join our 2-day sewing workshop where you can create this fabulous, customisable, unlined coat/cardigan.

This session is perfect for beginners with some sewing machine experience who are eager to learn garment making. Designed with patch pockets and full-length sleeves with a wide cuff and an open front with a folded front tab.

The class caters to both confident beginners and those with more sewing experience who wish to socialise while stitching. Attendees will not only leave with a stylish finished piece but also gain a wealth of new sewing skills to enhance their making skills.

Suggested Fabrics: This pattern is designed for woven fabrics and can be made in a wide variety of fabrics, but for your first version, we recommend fabrics like boiled wool, fleece, or micro suede, or even a sweater knit, which allow you to achieve that relaxed, yet put-together look.

Class Booking Policy

Please note that class bookings are non-refundable. Due to our small class sizes, rescheduling is also very limited. If you notify us at least two weeks before the scheduled class, we will do our best to transfer your booking to another date—however, this cannot be guaranteed.

All classes require a minimum of four participants to run. In the unlikely event that we need to cancel due to low enrollment, we will contact you promptly and offer either a full refund or the opportunity to rebook on an alternative date.

Minimum age for this class: 16 years old.

Important note: We will be taking photos during the session for our website and marketing purposes. If you prefer not to be included in the photos, please inform us before the session.

Please note: Depending on your individual sewing speed and experience level, you may not finish your project within the session time. However, we will ensure you leave with all the guidance, instructions, and support you need to confidently complete it at home.

These Bring Your Own sewing sessions are designed to give you complete freedom with your dressmaking projects.

There’s no set garment to follow - you can bring along whatever you’re working on, whether that’s something you’ve just started, a piece you’ve become stuck with, or a project you simply want to refine and improve. With experienced tutor Emma Smith on hand throughout the day, you’ll have gentle, expert guidance whenever you need it, helping you overcome challenges, improve fit, and move your sewing forward with confidence. It’s also a wonderful way to spend a creative day in a warm, friendly studio alongside like-minded makers.

Whether you’re tackling a tricky construction detail, trying to perfect the fit of a garment, or simply wanting a supportive environment to enjoy your sewing, these sessions are designed to meet you exactly where you are in your sewing journey.

These Bring Your Own sewing workshops run regularly throughout the month, with multiple dates available across the year to suit a range of schedules.

Your Tutor

The workshop is led by Emma Smith, an experienced dressmaker and sewing tutor who teaches across a number of sewing schools throughout the UK. Emma is known for her calm, patient and encouraging teaching style, offering clear, practical support tailored to each individual project. She is always on hand to help you troubleshoot issues, refine techniques, and build your confidence as you sew.

Who is this workshop for?

These sessions are suitable for a wide range of abilities, as long as you are confident using a sewing machine and have some basic dressmaking experience.

They are ideal if you:

• Are partway through a project and feeling stuck

• Want help improving fit or construction

• Would like support with specific techniques (zips, collars, buttonholes, etc.)

• Are starting a new garment and want reassurance along the way

• Or simply want a relaxed, creative sewing day with expert guidance and like minded people

A 30-minute lunch break is included. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch, with fridge storage available in the studio, or visit one of the nearby cafés and food shops in Ashby de la Zouch.

Parking

Please note that the Rushtons Yard car park next to the shop has a maximum stay of 3 hours, which is not suitable for the full workshop.

We recommend using the South Street long-stay car park, which is a short walk away (charges apply).

Whether you’re looking to elevate your sewing skills, tackle a challenging project, or simply enjoy some dedicated time for sewing in good company, Sewing Club is the perfect place to do it!

Sewing Club is designed as a supportive, small-group workshop where you can bring along your own dressmaking project and enjoy two hours of expert guidance from our wonderful tutor, Emma Smith. Whether you’re starting something brand new each session or working steadily on an ongoing project, Emma is on hand to help you every step of the way -  from tricky techniques and fitting adjustments to overcoming those “stuck” moments we all encounter.

With a calm, encouraging teaching style, Emma creates a space where you can build confidence, refine your skills, and truly enjoy the process of sewing. Limited to 6 participants, each session ensures plenty of individual attention, making it suitable for all abilities (as long as you’re comfortable using a sewing machine).

Sewing Club is more than just a workshop -  it’s a chance to connect with like-minded people, share ideas, and spend a couple of hours immersed in creativity. With Janome 5060 QDC sewing machines, brand new Janome ML654D overlockers, and Oliso irons and ironing boards available to use, you’ll have everything you need for a productive and enjoyable session.

This is a Level 2 class intended for those already comfortable with a sewing machine. It's perfect for students who've completed our Introduction to Machine Sewing or Introduction to Dressmaking. You'll work on self-directed projects to further develop your skills.

Need assistance with a challenging technique or want dedicated sewing time? Join these Sewing Hive sessions! These are relaxed, tutor-led and designed to support your current project, regardless of where you are in the process.

Bring any sewing project you're working on. Whether it's a brand-new pattern, a partially completed piece, or repairs, expert guidance will be available. You can work at your own pace while utilising professional tools and space during these 3-hour Wednesday evening sessions, which you can book as needed.

What to Bring: Please bring your project and necessary materials. Our experienced teachers can assist with pattern cutting, fitting, and construction troubleshooting.

Materials: You're welcome to use our Pfaff studio machines and tools. However, you must bring along your own fabric, notions, and pattern, unless arranged otherwise.

Complete beginner - Learn how to use a sewing machine

Are you looking to learn how to sew and are a complete beginner?  Perhaps you learnt to sew in the past but are rusty and have lost all your confidence? If so, “Learn How To Use A Sewing Machine” is the course for you!

Designed for complete beginners, this course will see you learn the basics of using a sewing machine. You will…

• Learn all about the various parts of a Sewing Machine and their functions

• How to change a needle

• How to wind a bobbin

• How to thread the machine

• Learn the basic stitches and their uses, including straight stitch, zig zag etc

• Learn about the various sewing machine feet, their uses and how to change them

• Learn how to guide fabric through the machine, sewing in straight lines and around corners.

• Practice using the machine. You will produce sample pieces to take home

The class is led by Anne Acosta. Anne has worked in TV and theatre as a costume maker and spent much of her career as a fashion/textiles Technical Tutor at Loughborough University. Anne is a calm, warm and patient teacher with a wealth of knowledge and will expertly guide you throughout the class.

What do I need to bring?

We recommend that you bring a notebook. It’s handy to make notes on various aspects of the class that you can refer to once you’re in the comfort of your own home.

You may also wish to bring a water bottle and that is all (apart from yourself)!

The sewing studio has Janome 5060QDC sewing machines, over lockers, ironing board and iron. Calico and thread will be provided for you to practice on.

There will be 5 to 6 people in each class so that each person can get the attention they require.

The session is 2 hours long.  We believe this to be ideal for learning - long enough to begin to learn a new skill without being overwhelmed!

The studio is located within The Fabric Boutique at 5 Rushtons Yard, Ashby de la Zouch, so should you choose to purchase any haberdashery, fabric, notions etc, you can easily pop into the shop. Please be advised that the studio is up a flight of stairs. Parking is available next to The Fabric Boutique in Rushtons Yard Carpark. Please be advised there is a maximum of 3 hours parking and there is a charge. There is a long stay carpark a short walk from the shop on South Street - also subject to charges.

• • Cancellations made more than 14 days before the class - full refunds are available. Alternatively, you may transfer your booking to another class date, subject to availability.

  • Cancellations made within 14 days of the class - Unfortunately, we are unable to offer refunds for cancellations within two weeks of the class.

  If there is enough time and availability, we will do our very best as a goodwill gesture to move your booking to another class. Please understand that this is not guaranteed, as spaces are limited and late notice more often than not, means we cannot fill your place.

  • Refunds and credits

 Have you already begun your sewing journey, gained confidence with your sewing machine, and are now ready to progress into making your own garments?This one-day introduction to dressmaking is the perfect next step on your garment-making journey.

This course is ideal if you’re confident using a sewing machine and keen to make your first garment with support and guidance. It’s also a great next step if you’ve already completed another type of garment and would like to try something different, for example if you’ve made a top or dress before and are ready to move on to making a pair of trousers.

Led by experienced sewing teacher Emma Smith, the course offers a supportive, hands-on approach designed to build confidence step by step. Emma has many years of teaching experience and is known for her patient, attentive guidance. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout, with plenty of opportunity for individual support, advice and helpful sewing insights along the way.

In this workshop, you will be making the Chantelle Pants by Sew Liberated – a relaxed and wearable pair of trousers and a great introduction to trouser making.

The Chantelle Pants are an ideal project for building your dressmaking skills and confidence while learning the techniques involved in constructing a pair of trousers. During the day, Emma will guide you through the pattern and construction process, helping you understand each stage so that you not only make your own pair, but gain skills that you can take forward into future dressmaking projects.

Your own printed copy of the Chantelle Pants pattern is included in the course.

What You’ll Learn

Over the course of the workshop, you will be guided through the full dressmaking process:

• How to measure yourself accurately to determine your correct pattern size
• How to read and understand a commercial sewing pattern, including markings, notches, grainlines and layout instructions
• How to work out fabric requirements and select suitable fabrics and notions for your trousers
• How to prepare and handle your fabric correctly before cutting
• How to lay out your pattern pieces and cut accurately and confidently
• How to understand the construction process involved in making a pair of trousers
• How to construct your Chantelle Pants, with Emma supporting you throughout

As the course progresses, you will be supported step by step as you construct your trousers, building your dressmaking skills and confidence as you go.

This is a structured yet relaxed introduction to dressmaking, designed to take you from understanding your pattern through to creating your own handmade garment in a friendly and encouraging environment.

Most participants will complete their garment during the day. However, as everyone works at a different pace, some finishing details may be completed at home, with clear guidance provided.

If you would prefer to purchase your fabric in advance, please refer to these images when selecting your fabric and requirements, or feel free to pop into the shop for advice beforehand (or arrive a few minutes earlier than your workshop)!

Lunchtime

We’ll take a break of approximately 30 minutes for lunch during the day.

You’re very welcome to bring a packed lunch with you, and we have a fridge in the Sewing Studio if you’d like to keep it cool. Alternatively, Ashby has plenty of lovely cafés, bakeries and places to pick up something for lunch, all within easy walking distance. We even have a café right here in Rushtons Yard, directly opposite the shop.

We completely understand that sometimes plans change and unexpected things happen. However, as a small independent business, a great deal of time and preparation goes into organising each of our workshops. Places are very limited, tutors are booked in advance and costs are committed based on the number of people attending.

For this reason, we do have a cancellation policy in place. We hope you understand that this enables us to continue offering our small, friendly workshops while being fair to everyone involved.

If you need to cancel your place:

• If you cancel 14 days or more before the workshop, we will be happy to offer you a full refund or transfer your booking to another available workshop.

About the Course

Have you already begun your sewing journey, gained confidence with your sewing machine, and are now ready to progress into making your own garments? This one day introduction to dressmaking is the perfect next step on your garment-making journey.

This one day course is ideal if you’re confident using a sewing machine and keen to make your first garment with support and guidance. It’s also a great next step if you’ve already completed another type of garment and would like to try something different, for example if you’ve made trousers or a dress before and are ready to move on to sewing a top.

Led by experienced sewing teacher Emma Smith, the course offers a supportive, hands-on approach designed to build confidence step by step. Emma has many years of teaching experience and is known for her patient, attentive guidance. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout, with plenty of opportunity for individual support, advice, and helpful sewing insights along the way.

In this workshop, you will be making the Remy Raglan by Sew House Seven — a modern, beginner-friendly wardrobe staple designed with comfort and versatility in mind. The Remy Raglan is a relaxed, easy-to-wear top with a classic raglan sleeve and a gently shaped silhouette, making it a perfect garment to build confidence and skills. It is a size-inclusive pattern designed to fit a wide range of body shapes, and the course includes your own printed copy of the pattern.

What You’ll Learn

Over the course of the workshop, you will be guided through the full dressmaking process:

• How to measure yourself accurately to determine your correct pattern size

• How to read and understand a commercial sewing pattern, including markings, notches, grainlines and layout instructions

• How to work out fabric requirements and select suitable fabrics and notions for your garment

• How to prepare and handle your fabric correctly before cutting

• How to lay out your pattern pieces and cut accurately and confidently

• How to construct your garment, with Emma supporting you throughout

As the course progresses, you will be supported step by step as you begin constructing your garment, building skills and confidence as you go.

Have you already begun your sewing journey, gained confidence with your sewing machine, and are now ready to progress into making your own garments? This one day introduction to dressmaking is the perfect next step on your garment-making journey.

This one day course is ideal if you’re confident using a sewing machine and keen to make your first garment with support and guidance. It’s also a great next step if you’ve already completed another type of garment and would like to try something different, for example if you’ve made trousers or a dress before and are ready to move on to sewing a top.

Led by experienced sewing teacher Emma Smith, the course offers a supportive, hands-on approach designed to build confidence step by step. Emma has many years of teaching experience and is known for her patient, attentive guidance. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout, with plenty of opportunity for individual support, advice, and helpful sewing insights along the way.

In this workshop, you will be making the Remy Raglan by Sew House Seven — a modern, beginner-friendly wardrobe staple designed with comfort and versatility in mind. The Remy Raglan is a relaxed, easy-to-wear top with a classic raglan sleeve and a gently shaped silhouette, making it a perfect garment to build confidence and skills. It is a size-inclusive pattern designed to fit a wide range of body shapes, and the course includes your own printed copy of the pattern.

What You’ll Learn

Over the course of the workshop, you will be guided through the full dressmaking process:

• How to measure yourself accurately to determine your correct pattern size

• How to read and understand a commercial sewing pattern, including markings, notches, grainlines and layout instructions

• How to work out fabric requirements and select suitable fabrics and notions for your garment

• How to prepare and handle your fabric correctly before cutting

• How to lay out your pattern pieces and cut accurately and confidently

This one day course is ideal if you’re confident using a sewing machine and keen to make your first garment with support and guidance. It’s also a great next step if you’ve already completed another type of garment and would like to try something different, for example if you’ve made trousers or a dress before and are ready to move on to sewing a top.

Led by experienced sewing teacher Emma Smith, the course offers a supportive, hands-on approach designed to build confidence step by step. Emma has many years of teaching experience and is known for her patient, attentive guidance. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, and participants are encouraged to ask questions throughout, with plenty of opportunity for individual support, advice, and helpful sewing insights along the way.

In this workshop, you will be making the Remy Raglan by Sew House Seven — a modern, beginner-friendly wardrobe staple designed with comfort and versatility in mind. The Remy Raglan is a relaxed, easy-to-wear top with a classic raglan sleeve and a gently shaped silhouette, making it a perfect garment to build confidence and skills. It is a size-inclusive pattern designed to fit a wide range of body shapes, and the course includes your own printed copy of the pattern.

What You’ll Learn

Over the course of the workshop, you will be guided through the full dressmaking process:

• How to measure yourself accurately to determine your correct pattern size

• How to read and understand a commercial sewing pattern, including markings, notches, grainlines and layout instructions

• How to work out fabric requirements and select suitable fabrics and notions for your garment

• How to prepare and handle your fabric correctly before cutting

• How to lay out your pattern pieces and cut accurately and confidently

• How to construct your garment, with Emma supporting you throughout

As the course progresses, you will be supported step by step as you begin constructing your garment, building skills and confidence as you go.

This is a structured yet relaxed introduction to dressmaking, designed to take you from pattern understanding through to a finished handmade garment in a friendly, encouraging environment.

Most participants complete their garment during the day. However, as everyone works at a different pace, some finishing details may be completed at home, with clear guidance provided.

A basic sewing kit: small scissors, large scissors, pins or clips, hand sewing needles, fabric marking tool, and a seam ripper
Notebook and pen for taking notes
Water bottle (optional)

Materials for your garment:

You may bring your own fabric or purchase in the shop during the course, where guidance will be available to help you choose suitable fabrics and quantities.

Fabric requirements (including suggested quantities) are shown in the photographs attached to the pattern listing, alongside sizing information. If you would prefer to purchase your fabric in advance, please refer to these images when selecting your fabric and requirements, or feel free to pop into the shop for advice beforehand.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided throughout the sessions — sewing always runs better with refreshments.

Venue & Studio Information

The Sewing Studio is equipped with Janome 5060QDC sewing machines, overlockers, ironing stations, and Oliso irons. Classes take place in small groups of 5–6 people to ensure individual attention.

The studio is located within The Fabric Boutique at 5 Rushtons Yard, Ashby de la Zouch, LE65 1AL. Please note there is a flight of stairs leading to the studio from the shop floor.

For your comfort, there is a toilet and handwashing sink within the studio, as well as a small fridge available if you would like to keep any refreshments or cold drinks chilled during the session.

Parking is available nearby. There is Rushtons Yard car park adjacent to the shop; however, this has a maximum stay of 3 hours and charges apply, so it is not ideal for this workshop as you would need to move your car during the session.

We recommend using the long stay car park on South Street, which is only a short walk away. Charges also apply.

Sewing Club is designed as a supportive, small-group workshop where you can bring along your own dressmaking project and enjoy two hours of expert guidance from our wonderful tutor, Emma Smith. Whether you’re starting something brand new each session or working steadily on an ongoing project, Emma is on hand to help you every step of the way -  from tricky techniques and fitting adjustments to overcoming those “stuck” moments we all encounter.

With a calm, encouraging teaching style, Emma creates a space where you can build confidence, refine your skills, and truly enjoy the process of sewing. Limited to 6 participants, each session ensures plenty of individual attention, making it suitable for all abilities (as long as you’re comfortable using a sewing machine).

Sewing Club is more than just a workshop -  it’s a chance to connect with like-minded people, share ideas, and spend a couple of hours immersed in creativity. With Janome 5060 QDC sewing machines, brand new Janome ML654D overlockers, and Oliso irons and ironing boards available to use, you’ll have everything you need for a productive and enjoyable session.

Master the Art of Trouser Fitting: Create Your Custom Trouser Block in Just 2 Days!

Struggling to find trousers that fit just right? Whether commercial patterns don’t quite work for you or store-bought options fall short, this two-day workshop (total 13 hours) is here to change that!

Designed for confident sewists with experience using commercial patterns, this hands-on class will guide you through creating a personalised trouser block tailored to your unique measurements.

Over the 2 days, you’ll:
✨ Analyse fit issues in your existing trousers (handmade or ready-to-wear).
✨ Learn how to take precise body measurements.
✨ Draft a custom trouser block from scratch.
✨ Sew and fit a toile, adjusting for a custom fit.
✨ Transfer those adjustments to a paper pattern and create a durable card block.
✨ Use your block to design bespoke trouser patterns and modify commercial ones.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a custom fitting trouser block and the skills to draft and fit trousers with confidence. Ready to elevate your sewing game? Join us!

Class sizes for pattern drafting classes are set to a maximum of 6 students. This means more space in the studio for students and more individual time with the tutor.

If you have been sewing for a little while and are looking to build more skills in dressmaking this is definitely a workshop not to be missed. Come along to Stitching Kitchen and have fun with fabric and thread while learning how to handle slinky fabrics cut on the bias!

Emma Smith is teaching this one and you will be making a slip dress which is cut on the bias. She will teach you all the tips and tricks to ensure you get a great finish and a garment which flows across the body while fitting and allows you to move. There is good reason slip dresses are great for parties! 

For this workshop you can choose to make either the Simone Slip dress by closet core or Pensee dress by Deer and Doe. 

What you will learn/achieve

• Choosing the right size for your body

• All the theory of bias cut sewing, why it is so very special

• How to handle the slippery fabric while cutting out and sewing

• Which machine settings will help get the best finish

Tuition: full instruction and support in a small class (maximum of 6).

Use of our Pfaff and Janome machines in Stitching Kitchen's fully equipped studio.

You will need to choose which pattern you would like to make a week ahead so we can make sure it is ready for you. We can then let you know how much fabric you will need to buy. Don’t forget we have 10% in the shop for workshop attendees.

About your tutor

Emma studied Textiles at university and worked in child wear design.  She has a teaching and training qualification and has been a freelance sewing tutor for the last 5 years. She has a wealth of sewing knowledge and supports sewing studios and pattern designers the length and breadth of the country.
