Guthrie & Ghani, Birmingham - Pattern Drafting - 2 day Draft your own bodice block sewing class (2/2)
Master the Art of Bodice Fitting: Create Your Custom Bodice Block in Just 2 Days!
Struggling to find tops that fit just right? Whether commercial patterns don’t quite work for you or store-bought options fall short, this two-day (13 hours) workshop is here to change that!
Designed for confident sewists with experience using commercial patterns, this hands-on class will guide you through creating a personalised sleeveless bodice block tailored to your unique measurements.
Over the 2 days, you’ll:
✨ Analyse fit issues in your existing tops (handmade or ready-to-wear).
✨ Learn how to take precise body measurements.
✨ Draft a custom bodice block from scratch.
✨ Sew and fit a toile, adjusting for a custom fit.
✨ Transfer those adjustments to a paper pattern and create a durable card block.
✨ Discuss how to use your block to design bespoke top patterns and modify commercial ones.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a custom-fitting sleeveless bodice block and the skills to draft and fit tops confidently.
If time allows (depending on each individual's fitting), there may be the opportunity to also draft a sleeve. Due to the complex nature of the fitting process, this may not be possible for everyone, as time may be spent on perfecting their bodice fit.
With a maximum of just 6 students, you'll have plenty of room to take full advantage of the bright, airy studio and high cutting tables. Plus, there will be ample time for one-on-one support from Emma.

The Fabric Boutique - Get To Know Your overlocker
Description
If your overlocker has ever felt a little intimidating, or you’ve owned one for years but never quite felt in control of it, or perhaps you’re contemplating purchasing an overlocker — this workshop is perfect for you!
Tuesday 14th July 9.30am - 4.30pm
Tuesday 25th August 9.30 - 4.30pm
The workshop includes the Simple T-shirt paper pattern by Wardrobe By Me.
Perfect for beginner to intermediate sewists who are comfortable using a sewing machine but new to (or unsure about) overlockers, this friendly and practical day will build your confidence step by step. In the morning, we’ll take the mystery out of your machine. In the afternoon, you’ll put those new skills straight into practice by sewing a simple knit T-shirt by Wardrobe By Me to take home.
By the end of the day, you’ll properly understand your overlocker and feel confident using it independently!
Morning Session: All About Overlockers
We’ll cover:
• What an overlocker does — and when not to use one
• The parts of the machine (loopers, knives, presser foot, differential feed)
• Thread types, needles, and the difference between 3- and 4-thread seams
• Safety and best practice
Threading without tears:
• Step-by-step threading demonstration
• Understanding colour-coded threading
• Common mistakes (and how to fix them)
• Re-threading efficiently after breaks
Tension, stitches & troubleshooting:
• Adjusting tension dials with confidence
• Differential feed explained (no more stretched or wavy seams)
• Rolled hems versus standard overlocking
• Diagnosing issues from stitch appearance
Technique samples:
You’ll practise adjusting settings while working through:
• Wide and narrow seams
• Different stitch lengths
• Using differential feed
• Rolled hems
• Turning corners
• Starting and finishing seams neatly
• Gathering with an overlocker
⸻
Afternoon Session: Sew a Simple T-Shirt
The focus shifts to construction, giving you the chance to apply everything you’ve learned.
• Cutting your T-shirt pieces
• Marking notches and preparing your fabric
• Setting your machine correctly for knit seams
You’ll then build your T-shirt step by step:
• Shoulder seams
• Neckline (band or folded finish)
• Side seams
Hem finishing options include:
• Overlock and fold hem
• Twin needle alternative (demonstration)
• Understanding when a regular sewing machine is the better choice
⸻
This workshop is as much about understanding your machine as it is about making a garment. You’ll leave with both a finished (or nearly finished) T-shirt and the knowledge to use your overlocker with confidence in future projects.

Sew Different, Halifax - 3 day sewing retreat
Sew Different brings you their new sewing retreat set in the amazing mill complex of Dean Clough in Halifax. Spend a long weekend browsing fabrics, learning new techniques and creating a stylish piece of clothing that is completely unique. In between stitches you can indulge in a delicious afternoon tea and chat with like-minded sewists.
Choose your project from the Sew Different range of sewing patterns and, with the help of our expert advice and tuition, create a dress, top or jacket that fits you beautifully.
The Course
Our sewing retreat is suitable for all levels of experience. There is tuition on hand for beginners and intermediate sewists who have perhaps done some small sewing projects or made simple garments in the past.
The more experienced will enjoy the communal sewing spirit, the creative atmosphere and the trip out to the lovely Fabbadashery in Halifax where there will be time to browse and select from their beautifully curated range of fabrics. There will be help and advice in choosing your fabric from the resident experts.
After this, it is back to our dedicated sewing studio where you will have the benefit of a small teaching group (max 10) so that there is plenty of opportunity for one-on-one help if needed.
Our sewing teachers, Emma (right) and Tara (left), have many years experience with beginners, as well as more able sewists. Help and advice is there every step of the way, from choosing your fabric, to cutting your pattern and putting your garment together.
Every project is individual so we can tailor it to your own style and ability level. You can feel confident tackling new techniques knowing that technical help is always to hand.
Choose your project from the Sew Different range of multisize patterns. The designer, Laura, is often there on day one to “show you round” the patterns and assist with your choice.
We will be very happy to guide you towards a project that is right for your level of expertise and there are plenty of clothing samples in the studio to inspire you.
In the past we have helped to customise and pattern hack for our sewists to reflect their creative urges(!) so that each project is unique.

The Fabric Boutique - Get To Know Your overlocker
Description
If your overlocker has ever felt a little intimidating, or you’ve owned one for years but never quite felt in control of it, or perhaps you’re contemplating purchasing an overlocker — this workshop is perfect for you!
Tuesday 14th July 9.30am - 4.30pm
Tuesday 25th August 9.30 - 4.30pm
The workshop includes the Simple T-shirt paper pattern by Wardrobe By Me.
Perfect for beginner to intermediate sewists who are comfortable using a sewing machine but new to (or unsure about) overlockers, this friendly and practical day will build your confidence step by step. In the morning, we’ll take the mystery out of your machine. In the afternoon, you’ll put those new skills straight into practice by sewing a simple knit T-shirt by Wardrobe By Me to take home.
By the end of the day, you’ll properly understand your overlocker and feel confident using it independently!
Morning Session: All About Overlockers
We’ll cover:
• What an overlocker does — and when not to use one
• The parts of the machine (loopers, knives, presser foot, differential feed)
• Thread types, needles, and the difference between 3- and 4-thread seams
• Safety and best practice
Threading without tears:
• Step-by-step threading demonstration
• Understanding colour-coded threading
• Common mistakes (and how to fix them)
• Re-threading efficiently after breaks
Tension, stitches & troubleshooting:
• Adjusting tension dials with confidence
• Differential feed explained (no more stretched or wavy seams)
• Rolled hems versus standard overlocking
• Diagnosing issues from stitch appearance
Technique samples:
You’ll practise adjusting settings while working through:
• Wide and narrow seams
• Different stitch lengths
• Using differential feed
• Rolled hems
• Turning corners
• Starting and finishing seams neatly
• Gathering with an overlocker
⸻
Afternoon Session: Sew a Simple T-Shirt
The focus shifts to construction, giving you the chance to apply everything you’ve learned.
• Cutting your T-shirt pieces
• Marking notches and preparing your fabric
• Setting your machine correctly for knit seams
You’ll then build your T-shirt step by step:
• Shoulder seams
• Neckline (band or folded finish)
• Side seams
Hem finishing options include:
• Overlock and fold hem
• Twin needle alternative (demonstration)
• Understanding when a regular sewing machine is the better choice
⸻
This workshop is as much about understanding your machine as it is about making a garment. You’ll leave with both a finished (or nearly finished) T-shirt and the knowledge to use your overlocker with confidence in future projects.
Your tutor: Emma Smith
The workshop is led by Emma Smith, a highly experienced dressmaker and tutor who teaches at a number of sewing schools across the UK. Sew Different - Yorkshire Wool Heritage Retreat (3 days)
Join us for an immersive three-day retreat starting at one of the country’s oldest textile mills, where they design their own distinctive fabrics. Hear about the full design journey from inception to completion, explore an exquisite selection of textiles, and create your own stunning heritage wool jacket.
Itinerary
Begin your journey in the Sew Different studio, where you’ll select from four beautiful lined jackets and a selection of dresses. We’ll then visit a historic textile mill nestled in the scenic Calder Valley, dating back to the 1850s. Browse their exclusive range of tweeds, tartans, and handcrafted blankets, and learn how they collaborate with talented weavers and finishers to bring their innovative fabrics and accessories to life.
Meet Mike, part of the passionate husband-and-wife team behind From the Mills. He says, “West Yorkshire is celebrated worldwide for its wool weaving heritage, and it’s a privilege to be part of this vital and beautiful chapter of British history.”
Over a cup of tea and biscuits, you’ll discover the intricate wool fabric process from start to finish, along with the captivating history of the mill itself.
Working with Tweed
After selecting and purchasing your fabric, we’ll return to the Sew Different studio. With guidance from our expert tutors, you’ll begin crafting your own bespoke jacket or dress. You may choose to line it with luxurious viscose or soft cotton from the Sew Different range for added comfort and style. Our tutors experience and textile knowledge will help you to get the best from your fabric.
On day 2, you can break from your sewing to enjoy a creative button-covering workshop. Whether you opt for tweed-covered buttons to match your jacket or soft and sophisticated leather to accentuate its colours, you’ll personalise your piece to make it truly yours. You may choose traditional machine-made button holes or you can join the tutor-led group to learn how to hand-stitch your own.
By day 3 you will be coming to the finish of your jacket. For those finishing early, we offer various small projects, from hairbands to bags, to use leftover scraps—ensuring that none of your beautiful fabric goes to waste.
Shopping
There will be plenty of opportunity for browsing/ purchasing the beautiful blankets, throws and fabrics produced by From the Mill. (Please note that we are not see the weaving or manufacturing process at this mill).

Their knowledge and ideas encourage and inspire you to have a go and create. We met as strangers with a common goal and left with new found friends with similar minds. I would recommend these retreats to anyone from beginners to experienced sewing fans. I find these weekends are full of lessons to learn, fittings to improve, methods to learn, laughter to share, friends to make all under the careful tutorage of Sarah and Emma. On my weekend, I worked on and finished a pair of self drafted trousers, Winnie culottes and made a lined denim jacket. Thankyou” - Jo - May 2025
"I had a brilliant time at the Retreat and learned so much! The course definitely met my expectations, and I came away completely inspired. I genuinely feel that the Retreat has given me a huge confidence boost, and that I'm at the start of an even more exciting part of my sewing journey." - Tina - January 2025
"I cannot thank you enough for the retreat, you really are a pleasure to be around. The retreat exceeded any expectations I had.

The Fabric Boutique, Sew a casual jacket - 2 day course
Workshop Dates:
• Thursday 7th May | 9:30am – 4:30pm
• Friday 8th May | 9:30am – 4:30pm
Join us for a relaxed and creative two-day sewing workshop where you’ll make your very own casual, everyday jacket under the expert guidance of experienced sewing tutor Emma Smith.
Over the two days, Emma will guide you step by step through the entire process - from measuring to find your correct size, cutting out your pattern and fabric, through to construction and achieving a fit that works beautifully for you. Along the way, you’ll develop and refine a range of garment-making techniques, including sewing buttonholes and adding patch pockets, carefully working on their placement to achieve a balanced, professional finish.
What will I make?
We’ll be using the Wardrobe By Me Painter Jacket pattern — a stylish and versatile unisex design with a relaxed, slightly oversized silhouette, dropped shoulders and practical patch pockets. It’s the kind of jacket that works effortlessly as an everyday layer, whether worn with jeans or thrown over a dress. The pattern company recommends sewing it in a medium-weight woven fabric such as denim, canvas, corduroy or cotton twill, giving it structure while keeping it comfortable for everyday wear. The pattern offers inclusive sizing, and full size details are included in the workshop images, so please do take a moment to check the measurements to ensure this class is the right fit for you.
The official Wardrobe By Me paper pattern (including full instructions) is included in the price of the workshop, and you’ll take it home with you!
This workshop isn’t just about learning techniques and producing a beautiful jacket (although you absolutely will!) — it’s also an opportunity to spend two inspiring days under the guidance of a recognised and experienced teacher. It’s a chance to slow down, focus on your sewing, and enjoy time with others who share your interests. Come along with a friend or make new ones while you’re here — it’s a wonderful way to learn, create and connect.
Led by experienced sewing teacher Emma Smith, the workshop is taught at a steady, supportive pace. Emma has been teaching for many years and is known for her patient, attentive approach. There will be plenty of opportunity for individual guidance and questions throughout the two days.
If you’d like help choosing fabric, just let us know - we’re always happy to point you in the right direction. You’re also very welcome to arrive 30 minutes early on the day to choose and purchase fabric in the shop.

There will be a ½-hour break for lunch.
A friendly and supportive couple of days of sewing, fitting and finishing - and hopefully the start of many pairs of handmade trousers to come!
