Stitching Kitchen, Brackley - Bodice Block/sloper fitting

Join us at Stitching Kitchen for a day of advanced dressmaking with our tutor Emma Smith. She will teach you how to adjust a bodice block to fit you - this can then be your jumping off point for tops and dresses from here on.

Starting with a simple bodice block / sloper you will make adjustments to the calico mock up and then transfer these adjustments to create a bodice block which works for your body.
A very common adjustment is to allow for a larger bust. It is often known as a Full Bust Adjustment or FBA. Once you know how to make this alteration to your paper patterns, your dressmaking will be transformed forever!

What you will learn/achieve

The workshop will cover:

  • Taking accurate measurements

  • Making a calico mock up - also known as a muslin/toile

  • Evaluating fit

  • Fitting adjustments

  • Transferring those adjustments back to your block.

You’ll make a muslin/toile and then be able to make further adjustments to your pattern.

What's included

Tuition: full instruction and support in a friendly incusive environment. Small class size

All tools and equipment needed on the day, including calico and pattern paper.

Use of Pfaff and Janome machines and sewing kit in Stitching Kitchen's fully equipped studio.

What to bring

Sew Different, Halifax - 3 day sewing retreat

Sew Different brings you their new sewing retreat set in the amazing mill complex of Dean Clough in Halifax. Spend a long weekend browsing fabrics, learning new techniques and creating a stylish piece of clothing that is completely unique. In between stitches you can indulge in a delicious afternoon tea and chat with like-minded sewists.

Choose your project from the Sew Different range of sewing patterns and, with the help of our expert advice and tuition, create a dress, top or jacket that fits you beautifully.

The Course

Our sewing retreat is suitable for all levels of experience. There is tuition on hand for beginners and intermediate sewists who have perhaps done some small sewing projects or made simple garments in the past.

The more experienced will enjoy the communal sewing spirit, the creative atmosphere and the trip out to the lovely Fabbadashery in Halifax where there will be time to browse and select from their beautifully curated range of fabrics. There will be help and advice in choosing your fabric from the resident experts.

After this, it is back to our dedicated sewing studio where you will have the benefit of a small teaching group (max 10) so that there is plenty of opportunity for one-on-one help if needed.

Our sewing teachers, Emma (right) and Tara (left), have many years experience with beginners, as well as more able sewists. Help and advice is there every step of the way, from choosing your fabric, to cutting your pattern and putting your garment together.

Every project is individual so we can tailor it to your own style and ability level. You can feel confident tackling new techniques knowing that technical help is always to hand.

Choose your project from the Sew Different range of multisize patterns. The designer, Laura, is often there on day one to “show you round” the patterns and assist with your choice.

We will be very happy to guide you towards a project that is right for your level of expertise and there are plenty of clothing samples in the studio to inspire you.

In the past we have helped to customise and pattern hack for our sewists to reflect their creative urges(!) so that each project is unique.

Carolyn Rose School of Sewing, Leamington Spa - A Make in a Day - The Factory Dress/Shirt by Merchant and Mills

Join us for a full day of sewing as we make the timeless Factory Dress by Merchant & Mills. With its relaxed fit, workwear details, and effortless style, this dress is a versatile piece you’ll want to wear again and again.

During this workshop you will:

  • Cut and prepare your fabric using the Factory Dress pattern

  • Learn key dressmaking skills such as collars, darts, sleeves, in-seam  and/or patch pockets, and neat facings

  • Gain tips and techniques for achieving a professional finish

  • Leave with a completed dress (or very nearly finished, depending on your pace) and the confidence to sew it again at home

By the end of the day, you’ll have your very own handmade Factory Dress and the skills to make many more.

Fabric & Pattern Information
The Factory Dress pattern is available in two size ranges:

·       UK 8–18

·       UK 20–28

Please do not base your size off what you would purchase on the high street. Every pattern's size chart is different so the best way to be sure is to measure yourself and compare to the size chart pictured.

We recommend buying your fabric in advance and giving it a wash before the workshop. This helps to pre-shrink the fabric and ensures your finished dress keeps its shape after future washes. If you’d like some guidance choosing the right fabric, we’ll be more than happy to help you — just pop into the shop and we can advise you.

This workshop is not suitable for beginners to sewing or garment making. Must have previous experience sewing garments from a pattern.
